About Mike Nellums

Mike Nellums Mike is recently retired from a 37 year career in television production. Born and raised in southern Mississippi, he cannot remember when he was not interested in movies and photography. His dream, when he was younger, was to move to Hollywood and become involved in the television or motion picture industry. That dream did not happen, but what did happen was a wonderful lifetime of creative work in local television and national cable television networks. After eleven years of working in Jackson, Mississippi, Mike moved to New Orleans to work for a major CBS affiliate there. First as a news editor/photographer then as a Writer/Producer in the On-Air Promotions Department. From New Orleans, he took a position with the Discovery Channel in Washington, DC. While at Discovery Communications, Inc.,he worked first as Writer/Producer doing on-air Discovery promos for the network. When the Learning Channel was born, he moved over to TLC to continue writing and producing on-air promos for that network. From TLC he became a department head for the newly created Animal Planet On-Air Promotions department where he oversaw a staff of writer/producers. After 7 years with Discovery, he took a position with National Geographic Television as its chief writer/producer for the weekly Explorer television show. Fast forward to his years in Providence. He worked again as a writer/producer/videographer/copywriter/video editor doing local cable commercials for a national cable company headquartered in Providence. During the course of all those many years, Mike never stopped taking pictures. He never owned a regular 35mm camera until later in his life. A medium format Pentax 6X7 film camera was his very first camera. He remembers as a young boy admiring gorgeous calendar shots of Swiss mountains and alpine villages. He knew this was the kind of photography he wanted to do. He wondered how the photos could look so sharp and realistic. Large format photography was the secret. He couldn't afford an 8 X 10 view camera, so he continued with medium format photography capturing dynamic panoramics with his Linhof 617 Technorama panoramic camera which he still has. Eventually he did break down and buy a Nikon 6006 35mm film camera later - and when digital photography came along, he embraced the new technology and acquired a Nikon D70 with a macro, super wide angle lens, and an 18-270 zoom lens. Well, that's his life story. He's had the good fortune of doing a lot of traveling in his life, and he looks forward to sharing all the photos he's taken over the years. Mike looks forward to future postings with this website and your reviews.
